About the NPI registry
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is the standard identifier for healthcare providers in the United States, used on insurance claims, prescriptions and referrals. Because the NPPES registry is public, an NPI lookup is the quickest way to confirm a provider’s legal name, classified specialty, practice address and whether their record is active — useful for billing, credentialing and patient verification. This tool queries the official CMS registry directly, so results are current. For business identifiers, see the EIN lookup.
