How a NAICS code is built
A NAICS code reads left to right, each digit narrowing the industry. The first two digits are the
sector — 20 broad groups such as Construction (23) or Retail Trade
(44-45). The third digit gives the subsector, the fourth the industry
group, the fifth the NAICS industry, and the sixth the national industry
— the most specific level, and the one most registrations want. So 722511 unfolds as Accommodation
and Food Services (72) → Food Services and Drinking Places (722) → Restaurants and
Other Eating Places (7225) → Restaurants (72251) → Full-Service Restaurants
(722511). The first five digits are standardised across the United States, Canada and Mexico; the
sixth is country-specific, which is why it's called the national industry.
Choosing the right code
Unlike most identifiers on this site, a NAICS code isn't issued or looked up in a registry — you self-assign it based on your primary revenue-generating activity. There's no application and no approval, but the choice still matters: it drives your eligibility for size standards and set-asides on SAM.gov and federal contracts, appears on some state and tax registrations, and determines which industry benchmarks a lender or insurer compares you against. The practical method is to search a plain keyword for what you actually do, then pick the most specific six-digit code that fits; if two are close, choose the one matching where most of your revenue comes from. A business with several lines can list more than one code, but one is designated primary.
2022 NAICS, and what this tool is
NAICS is revised every five years; this tool uses the 2022 edition, the current U.S. version, taken directly from the U.S. Census Bureau's published structure — all 2,125 codes from the 20 sectors down to the 1,012 six-digit national industries. Because the data is bundled, the search runs entirely in your browser with nothing sent to a server. A code that was retired or renumbered in the 2022 revision won't resolve here — that's expected, not an error. Frequently asked questions
- The North American Industry Classification System code is a 2- to 6-digit number that classifies a business by its primary economic activity. It is the standard used by U.S. federal agencies for statistics, and by many contracts and registrations. This tool searches the official 2022 NAICS list.
- Six. The 2-digit prefix is the broad sector, and each extra digit narrows the industry: sector → subsector → industry group → NAICS industry → national (6-digit) industry. Registrations such as SAM.gov generally want the full 6-digit code.
- Search by a keyword that describes what you do (for example, "landscaping" or "software"), then pick the most specific 6-digit code that matches your primary activity. You self-assign it — there is no application or approval.
- The 2022 revision, the current U.S. edition, sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau. NAICS is revised every five years, so a handful of codes differ from the 2017 list; codes retired in 2022 will not appear here.
- SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) is the older 4-digit system NAICS replaced in 1997. Some databases still carry SIC codes, but NAICS is the current federal standard and the two do not map one-to-one.
