About counting characters

Character limits are everywhere — a 60-character title tag before Google truncates it, 160 for a meta description or a single SMS segment, 280 for a post on X. This counter shows the live character, word, line and UTF-8 byte totals and how your text measures against each cap, turning red the moment you exceed one. For reading-time and detailed word stats, see the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

How is a character counted?
Every Unicode character including spaces, line breaks, emoji and punctuation counts as one. A separate figure excludes whitespace, and the byte count shows the UTF-8 size.
What are the platform limits for?
Posts and fields on X/Twitter, SMS, meta descriptions, title tags and more have hard character caps. The bars show how close you are and turn red when you go over.
Why does an emoji count as more than one?
On screen it is one character, but in UTF-8 bytes — and on some platforms’ own counters — an emoji can take several code units. The byte figure reflects that.
Is my text private?
Yes — counting happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded.
